The fundamental aim of the video should be to clearly demonstrate your technical, tactical and physical abilities within your given position to coaches, scouts, and recruiters.

It is important to note that a well-constructed highlight tape does not guarantee immediate placement within a team or roster. Instead, its true value lies in its capacity to open doors and effectively place you on the radar of clubs and teams that you are targetting.

WHAT SHOULD A HIGHLIGHT REEL INCLUDE?

I get asked on a frequent basis by players in the process of creating their highlight reels what should they include and how a professional highlight tape should be structured. The truth is this is a topic that is subjective, based upon the coaches/scouts/recruiters preferences ,however there are some universal rules that should be followed in order to give yourself the best chance of being discovered which I have outlined below:

Clear marking/indication of who you are in each clip

Sounds simple right? Clear marking in each clip makes the process as easy as possible for the viewer to identify your influence during each play and see the qualities you bring in your actions. It´s a real surprise the amount of players that miss out on this crucial step.

Suitable music choice for
theme song

If you are expecting coaches to take you seriously then you have to present yourself in a professional manner. Keep songs with profanities out of your tape and choose something that is upbeat and grabs the coach´s attention. A small but important detail that should be considered when putting together a highlight tape.

A highlight tape is a ´highlight tape´ for a reason

Remember that a highlight tape should be a short summary of the best attributes of your game so think carefully about each clip you include. This means that simple passes, basic movements etc. should be left out and concentrate on utilizing high-quality clips that can help separate you from the competition.

Differentiation of qualities specific to your position

Remember coaches want to see you demonstrate the qualities required in your SPECIFIC position. This means if you are a defender, show your defensive qualities: physicality, reading of the game, ariel ability. Sure include your ability with the ball and technical qualities but don´t stray to far adrift from the priority.

I have reviewed 1000´s of highlight tapes over the years and it still surprises me how players forget to include a slide/graphic containing their basic playing and contact information. This graphic is extremely important when introducing yourself to coaches/scouts/recruiters and lets them know where they can find you if they like what they see.

keep it short and sweet! 4-6 minutes is the ideal time frame.

On average, a coach/scout/recruiter makes his verdict on a player within the first minute of a player´s highlight tape, that´s why it´s important to keep things as short and sweet as possible. My experience tells me that 4-6 minutes is the perfect length for a professional highlight tape, enough to demonstrate consistency whilst keeping things interesting for anyone watching.
